Friday mornings at 7:30 I bicycle north on Ave. 10 to the Diabetes Clinic at Angel Notion. This association is for the most part a free clinic for natives with both medical doctors and alternative healing therapies. About 20 people show up at 8:00 am Friday to have their blood sugar tested, have their blood pressure taken, be weighed and measured, and meet with doctors to have medication monitored. When I first went I simply helped the doctors with this process, but as time passed it became clear that more was needed. The clients fast before having their sugar tested and often would grab junk food upon leaving the clinic to break the fast. I was told that if some good food could be available for them it would make a big difference. Well, I love to cook, so I took on the project. I bring the raw ingredients in my bicycle basket and recruit helpers from the clients, as they finish being tested, to chop veggies and stir pots on the stove (whose burners only achieve a flame of 1/4 inch, due simply to old age). And now a young woman, Nadia, who is a trained nutritionist, teaches better nutrition practices while they eat and answers questions.
This morning we made Potato Salad that was loaded with vegetables: celery, onions, carrots, corn, a chopped apple, a couple hard boiled eggs and a few strips of crumbled bacon. The dressing was low fat mayonnaise with olive oil and apple cider vinegar. I boiled the potatoes and eggs at home last night because boiling takes hours on their ancient stove. We also cut up a couple cantaloupes into cubes. Both were very well received. We were careful with serving size: 1/2 cup of each, but this was enough to healthfully break a fast.
If anybody locally has a stove that they are not using, please consider donating it to Angel Notion. This institution has proved it’s worth over years of service. Their website is: www.angelnotion.org. It began serving children but has expanded its’ clientele to include this diabetic clinic for adults, a prenatal clinic, and there are plans for a birthing center. (Perhaps even more clinics than I know of now.) The clinic building is situated at the very north end of Playa del Carmen, away from the tourists and serves the local people.
