January 19 is my partner Jim’s birthday. He really needed nor wanted anything, but showed me a house in our neighborhood with lots of bougainvillaea flowers in three colors that he liked very much. I took pictures and returned to look at it repeatedly while painting and got it finished only a couple days after his birthday. He also love VWs, so I inserted one of those.
But on his actual birthday a group of us went to Mom’s Restaurant for Wednesday night Short Ribs dinner. It was an evening of good conversation and music by a solo guitar, but the event was topped off by Dr. Jane’s addition to the birthday cake. I had purchased a cheesecake at the Mega grocery store with lots of fruit decorating the top. Jane said she had a little something to add. This turned out to be a pink plastic tulip-like flower that stood on legs atop the cake. A wick was ignited which created a great flare and almost immediately the petals of the flower dropped open leaving small candles burning at the the tips of each, while the “Happy Birthday” song echoed from the core. It was a great success and many of the other diners were equally intrigued.
