Last Spring we drove 5 or 6 times from Playa del Carmen (on the Caribbean coast) to Merida, the largest city on the Yucatan peninsula, using the free highway which passes through small villages and past the Chichen Itza ruins. The toll road is much quicker but not very interesting with very few exits. The free road has many, many “topes” (speed bumps) which slows traffic for every town, often three or four topes per village. But it gave me the opportunity to stop for photos. These are the resulting drawings from our adventures.
